On January 8, 2009, the streaming video site Crunchyroll began offering English subtitled episodes of the series. The second season was released over thirteen volumes between Jand July 23, 2008.
In Japan, Aniplex distributes the anime in DVD format. All three are "free-lancers" who search for work in order to pay the monthly rent, which usually goes unpaid anyway. The story revolves around an eccentric samurai, Gintoki Sakata, his apprentice, Shinpachi Shimura, and a teenage alien girl named Kagura. The anime is based on Hideaki Sorachi's manga of the same name.
They aired in TV Tokyo from April 5, 2007, until March 27, 2008, with a total of 50 episodes which are episodes 51–99 from the main series. The second season of the Japanese anime television series Gin Tama are directed by Shinji Takamatsu and animated by Sunrise.
